All about the

African Gray Parrot

Gray African Grey parrot perched on a curved wooden perch beside colorful toy ropes inside an outdoor cage.

Psittacus erithacus

Conservation Status: Endangered (EN)*

Diet: Herbivore/frugivore (fruits, seeds, nuts).

Range: Tropical moist lowlands & swamps of Equatorial Africa

Adaptations: With a high brain-to-body ratio, their complex cognition makes them one of the most intelligent parrot species. Compared to humans, they exhibit the capacities of a 5-year-old child. Instead of simply mimicking sounds, they utilize context and even syntax! In the wild, they are highly social and nest in large groups. They form lifelong monogamous bonds and live to an average of 40 years old. In the wild, humans are by far the biggest threat to their wild, endangered population.

Meet our resident

African Gray Parrot

HI, MY NAME IS STOSH!

“My favorite food is dried bananas, and I love to solve puzzles!”

Because Stosh has been in humans’ care for his entire life, he cannot be released into the wild due to his lack of skills for survival (such as foraging, sociability, and flight skills).

Wonder Gardens proudly gives him the long-term, loving home that he needs by meeting the highest standards of care in our animal husbandry program.

Want to meet Stosh? Get your admission tickets today to say hello & support the organization that cares for him!
